Singer Magazine
2021
A speculative approach on challenging people to think about animals as equals. For this I wrote, designed and edited a magazine with stories on cows that need social service, zoos without real animals and architect that adapt cities to co-live with animals.
Process
Theory research and prototyping
Through the works of Singer, Meijer and others I dived into the topic without any previous knowledge on animal ethics. My goal was to create a product that challenges thought in a digestible and fun way. For this I prototyped with various tools snippets of the world I was shaping. Ranging from speculative timelines to correspondence between a farmer and his municipality on animal friendly laws.
Copywriting and content creation
After deciding on the definitive scope I started with writing the articles and the necessary content. This did not only entail the articles but also other material that makes up a magazine experience. I made advertisements, visual articles and other supportive content that made the experience whole.

Result
The result was an 44 page magazine that was printed to be experienced as an physical product. The booklet has various articles that are build upon the ethical agenda proposed in the book Zoopolis (Donaldson and Kymlicka). This roughly consists of three non-human animals categories: Domesticated, Sovereign and Liminal animals that are each put in a political perspective. The articles in the magazine continues the line of thought of and speculate about a world in which non-human animals have a different position in society.
